The battle for the position of speaker of the county assembly in Nandi county has intensified with lawyers dominating the race.

So far at least six lawyers have thrown their hat in the ring.

They include Kapsabet-based Advocate Timon Lel, Advocate Gideon Kibet Kisorio and Political Analyst Joshua Kiptoo.

Outgoing Nandi County Legal advisor George Tarus is also in the race for the seat whose winner is expected to preside over business in the county assembly.

Others include Titus Bittok and the outgoing Assembly Speaker Edwin Cheluget who is rumoured to be seeking to defend his seat.

However the battle has since gone down to a two-horse race with Advocate Kisorio and political analyst Kiptoo engaging in tough battle.

The two candidates have intensified campaigns at the grassroots in the race expected to be decided majorly on the factor of regional balancing. In the recently concluded elections all the sub counties with the exception of Nandi Hills and Tinderet got a share of the top county slots. The seats are; Governor(Aldai), Deputy Governor(Mosop), Senator(Chesumei) and Women Rep(Emgwen).

If the county assembly was to vote based on the spirit of regional balancing the seat would go to either Nandi Hills or Tinderet constituency. This will be an added advantage to Kisorio, who hails from Nandi Hills constituency and Kiptoo, who has claimed to be from Tinderet contradicting earlier reports that he hails from Aldai.

Kiptoo has had to battle claims that he is from Aldai constituency, the backyard of the Governor-elect Stephen Sang.

Mr. Kisorio will also be banking on his colourful legal career having commendable knowledge in Commercial Law and Conveyancing, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Family Law matters, Probate and Administration and Anti-Corruption Legal Framework.

He is currently a senior legal officer with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board and prior to that he worked with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

On the other hand,Mr. Kiptoo, a celebrated political analyst, brings on board a wealth of knowledge.

A law graduate from the University of Nairobi, he majored in International law, international trade law and East Africa Community law.

He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Kenya.
