The Uasin Gishu Speaker’s seat will likely be one of the most competitive races in the North Rift region as learned colleagues brave for a bruising face-off.

Two young female candidates have emerged among the front-runners in the battle for the highly coveted seat.

New this week is Advocate Jane Cheptoo Masai who made public her intentions to run for the Speaker’s position.

Advocate Masai, who runs a law firm, has vast knowledge in insurance law, criminal law, Industrial Relations, Unions and employment law, family Law and succession matters.

The other female front-runner is Advocate Ruth Chemutai Chelashaw, a State Council at the office of the Attorney General.

Advocate Chelashaw, reportedly has the blessings and support of Governor Jackson Mandago while Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi is being keenly watched on who among the two he will support since both are his close allies.

In the assembly these women seek to head, their presence if either of them succeeds will be extraordinary: There has never been a woman county assembly speaker in the North Rift region.

The race will likely become an extremely pricey one after Incumbent Speaker Isaac Terer announced last week that he will defend his seat.

Also in the race for the Speaker’s seat include Advocate Christopher Mitei, David Kiplagat and Ezekiel Kiyeng.
