Trans Nzoia County to export technical skills to curb youth unemployment

Trans Nzoia County Governor Patrick Khaemba has said the county will begin exporting technicians in various fields in a move aimed at fighting youth unemployment.

Governor Khaemba said the youth currently enrolled in the county’s 28 technical and vocational education training (TVET) centers across the county for technical skills in fields such as carpentry, plumbing, masonry, tailoring, metal work, hairdressing and electricity among others will be in a position to export their skills and provide professional services within and outside the country.

Speaking in Top Suwerwa in Chepsiro/Kiptoror ward, Cherangany sub-county where he officially opened the Top Suwerwa Youth Vocational Training Center, the county boss said there are opportunities outside the country for youth with technical skills ready to work as expatriates.

“Technical skills are essential in for self-employment in our country yet supply of such skills remains low not only here in Kenya but also abroad where many people shun them for white-color jobs. As a county government we continue to invest in TVET in order to create enough manpower for our own use and for export and I will personally look for opportunities abroad for our qualified youth,” said Khaemba.

He called upon parents to enroll their children who do not qualify for higher learning into the county’s TVET centers.

“We should not push all our children into universities to pursue degree courses some of which are irrelevant to the market needs. Let us encourage them to take up courses at our vocational training centers to help them secure employment easily,” he said.

The county government sets aside 30% of the Elimu Bursary Fund to support students in TVET and this has seen a surge in enrolment across the county.
