West Pokot Governor Professor John Lonyangapuo has issued a one week ultimatum to striking nurses in the county to return to work.

Governor Lonyangapuo said the nurses must return to work failure to which they will face stern action.

The striking nurses in the County have now seven days to resume duty or face dismissal by the County government.

Governor John Lonyangapuo, while issuing the ultimatum today (Monday) threatened to sack and replace all the striking nurses in the County after the expiry of the notice.

“I have today ordered all striking nurses in West Pokot County to resume work, failure to which stern action will be taken,” said Lonyangapuo.

The Governor said the government will not sit and watch as innocent Kenyans seeking medical services at public hospitals in the County suffer.

He said the stalemate has thrown patients into untold suffering.
The West Pokot County boss was speaking during a visit to Kapenguria County Referral Hospital in Kapenguria, Sub-County.

Lonyangapuo expressed pity over the situation at the hospital where wards remained deserted.

“Negotiations have been ongoing and I’ve met the nurses’ officials several times in bid to end the three-month long strike,” he lamented.

It is expected that if the striking nurses do not return to work, the county government will begin the process of hiring new nurses in all public health facilities in the county.

The Council of Governors (CoG) had written to the county bosses on July 31 asking them to advertise positions held by any nurses in their regions who did not report for duty by Friday September 9.

The nurses have vowed to defy the CoG order requiring them to resume work until a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) they signed is implemented.
