A prominent leader in Elgeyo Marakwet County is allegedly dishing out millions in cash to members of county assembly to “persuade” them to vote for a candidate of his choice for the position of assembly speaker.

The prominent personality has been in talks with MCAs and is alleged to have injected a whopping Sh4 million to “finance” them in order to elect his preferred candidate identified as one Philemon Sabulei.

One MCA-elect who sought anonymity said he was approached Sunday evening and offered huge amount of money to cast his ballot for Philemon Sabulei tomorrow.

“I declined the offer, I do not take bribes, this is a serious issue for any leader of any assembly to accept to be bribed,” he said.

On Monday, the said leader held a meeting with some MCAs.

“The meeting was organized by one prominent leader who is backing Sabulei for the speaker,” an MCA nominee who was present said.

After the meeting, they were given “some good amount of money”, he said.

The nominated MCA said a candidate with merit will likely win. He said the MCAs will not be persuaded by money but by a candidate with competence to give direction to the assembly.

‘’We are going to elect a person based on their competence to direct the assembly to enact legislation aimed at bettering the lives of Wananchi,” he added.

For the last one month, candidates have been trying to outdo each other holding secret meetings with the MCAs seeking their support.

Incumbent Speaker Albert Kochei will not be defending his seat after he dropped out of the race against front runners Ledisha Kipseii and Philemon sabulei.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos during his inauguration last month wished all candidates well while stating categorically that he did not have a preferred candidate for the assembly speaker.

The assembly’s MCAs, 20 elected and 13 nominated will have the final say.
