Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos has said he has no preferred candidate for the Elgeyo Marakwet Speaker’s seat.

Speaking on Monday during his inauguration, Governor Tolgos wished all the candidates well while maintaining that no one should expect special treatment from him.

“As the Governor of Elgeyo Marakwet, I have no preferred candidate, I wish all of them well,” he said.

He disclosed that despite being the county boss, he does not have the jurisdiction or power to decide who becomes speaker as the decision rests with the Members of County Assembly.

The assembly’s MCAs who are elected and others nominated will have the final say.

“I want to assure the candidates that there is no preferred candidate and that they should feel free to campaign because it is the MCAs who will decide the next speaker,” he said.

Sources divulge that MCAs have unanimously agreed the Speaker’s Seat should go to Keiyo South to create regional balance in elective seats in the county.

Governor Tolgos comes from Marakwet West, Deputy Governor Wisley Rotich (Keiyo North), Senator Murkomen (Marakwet East), and Women Rep Jane Kiptoo Chebaibai (Keiyo North).

Governor Tolgos also told off some candidates who are “spreading romours” that the Governor was pushing the agenda of one of the candidates.

“I want to tell all the people of Elgeyo Marakwet that I am not supporting anybody. Anyone invoking my name either has a problem or has sensed defeat,” said Tolgos.

He said he is the senior most politician in the county, hence his decision to create harmony among all candidates and the people of Elgeyo Marakwet by remaining neutral.

Incumbent Speaker Albert Kochei is seeking to defend his seat against front runners Ledisha Kipseii and Philemon sabulei.

Ledishah Kipseii who is a law graduate of the University of Nairobi is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a weath of experience having practised for well over 15 years.

She is popularly recognised as a Human Rights champion and a strong advocate of the rights of women and children.

Ledisha contested for the same position in 2013 but lost by a paltry 1 vote.

Philemon Sabulei chaired Moses Changwony’s Campaign Secretariat and has a well-oiled campaign machinery with the support of Changwony and also with claims that he has the backing of Senator Murkomen.

Two high profile county employees are also among those eying the highly coveted seat. They are Gk Kimaiyo (County Director of ICT) and Jeremiah Changwony ( County Chief Officer – Finance)

Lawyers Thomas Maiyo (Iten) and Jonah Korir (Eldoret) are also contesting. Others in the race for Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly Speaker include Brian Chebii, Willy Chepkiyeng, Pius Tum, Dr Risper Berem, Barnabas Lagat, Laban Cheruiyot, Caroline Ngelechei and Sawachan Kinur.

Whoever is elected among them will act as the head of Legislative Arm of the County Government and preside over County Assembly sittings.
