Nicodemus Kipkirui, Brigid Chepchirchir win Kalya Half Marathon

​Nicodemus Kipkurui and Brigid Chepchirir, both from Elgeyo Maraket county were this year’s winners of 3rd edition Kalya,21 kilometer half marathon race held on Saturday in West Pokot county.

In the men’s category, the second position went to Reuben Limale and Hosea Muok came third, both from West Pokot.

In women’s category, the second position went to Lydia Jepchirchir from Elgeyo Marakwet and Naomi Orango from Kisii County came in third position.

The winners pocketed one hundred thousand shillings each and second and third position each received Kshs 75,000 and Kshs 50,000 each respectively. From position four to ten, each was given Kshs 5,000.

The race attracted 250 athletes compared to 120 who participated in 2015 edition.

The race started at 8.00am at MailiSaba in Trans Nzoia county and ended up in Makutano town (Kapenguria), where residents turned up in large numbers lining along the Kitale – Kapenguria highway.

The race brought together youths and sportsmen from the North Rift Region and the neigbouring Uganda and Tanzania countries, and the theme of the event was ‘let us run against Female genital mutilation and early marriages’.

The event was sponsored by a local radio station Kalya Fm, Safaricom foundation, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Sadolin, Gotv among others.

Kalya marathon official, Titus Kendagor said the event was aimed at fighting retrogressive practices that are rampant in the county.Kendagor observed that the event will help promote education of girls in the region who are at risk of dropping out of school.

“Many girls have been forced to drop out of school because of the vices, and last year during this marathon, we managed to rescue five girls who we are currently sponsoring to further their education,” he said.

He said the main aim of the race is to create awareness to help reduce the vices and reduce illiteracy levels in the region that will help the nation achieve vision 2030.
