Nandi County Governor Dr. Cleophas Lagat has called on both National and County Governments to allocate more funds to the agriculture sector.

Speaking when he presided over the close of the Eldoret ASK show 2017, Governor Lagat pointed out that agriculture is the backbone the country’s economy and should therefore be prioritized.

“Agriculture is the backbone of our economy and for maximum realization and economic prosperity we need to allocate more funds to the sector,”said Dr. Lagat.

The County boss challenged both National government and County governments to enhance funding to ensure the Maputo Declaration of 10% funding to agriculture is effected for the country to realize the desired growth as envisaged in Vision 2030.

Governor Lagat said in line with this year’s theme “Promoting Innovation and Technology in Agriculture and Trade” there is need for farmers to embrace Science, technology and innovation in agricultural production.

He lauded the National government for establishing incubation Centres in Nandi, under Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme (ASDSP).

“The incubation centres will bring together Universities in the region, extension officers and research organization particularly Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) to incubate technology in agriculture, livestock, fisheries and Value Chains,”he said.

The Governor further urged Institutions of Higher learning to partner with Counties saying this will lessen the bureaucratic process of doing business with government.

“It is envisaged that technology which has been developed by students in the regional universities should be offloaded from the Universities and pasted on the farms and on farm testing so that this technologies may be actualized,”he added.

He said counties in the North Rift region have intiated several projects and programmes to promote the agricultural sector.

He also urged farmers in the region to take advantage of Eldoret International Airport, which he said has become a gateway to international market, by diversifying and promoting horticulture for exports so as to improve incomes.

He at the same time exuded confidence that the North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB) will enhance strong regional economic ties within the eight Counties especially in the agriculture sector.
