Immediate Former Loima MP Protus Akuja was on Wednesday beaten in the race for Turkana County Assembly Speaker.

Akuja was beaten by Lawyer Erastus Lokaale who was sworn in as the new Speaker of the Turkana County Assembly.

Lokaale garnered a simple majority of 24 against 23 in the second round beating Akuja.

The race for the speaker’s position had been tipped as a test of might between the Jubilee party and the Nasa coalition in the county.

Akuja had the backing of the Jubilee team in the county while Lokaale was the preferred candidate for Governor Josephat Nanok and the Nasa brigade.

This is a big blow to the former lawmaker who was floored in the August polls by Jeremiah Ekamais, who served as MCA for Loima ward.

Lokaale now takes the baton from Geoffrey Kaituko, the pioneer speaker of the legislative arm of the county government.
