A new street mapping service in Eldoret town, Kenya, may make the lives of residents just a little bit easier. The service includes the mapping and naming of over 1,100 street segments in Eldoret municipality.

The mapping service of streets in the city of champions has been launched by NorthRift Solutions, in its latest effort to allow web and mobile phone users to easily navigate the area.

The street network is expected to form an enabling foundation for delivery services for both goods and services. Its enormous potential can also be tapped into by the county government for the purposes of planning and optimizing current street infrastructure to minimize the rampant congestion seen during peak hours.

“Launching the Eldoret street mapping system is part of our effort to make Maps more comprehensive, accurate and useful for people and organizations within the municipality,” NorthRift Solutions Director, Josses Kosgey said.

The system was developed from gathering data from multiple sources including public works, archived topographical maps, KURA and KERA planning documents, and high resolutions satellite imagery. Rigorous ground-truthing was carried out by way of drive-throughs along road segments of interest.

The interactive ‘smart’ map allows users to see all street names, intersections and road surface type within Eldoret town and its environs – the system as a whole casts like starfish tentacles and crowded core.

An inherent feature of the service is ability to calculate shortest distances based on time of day and road conditions.

“Defining cost parameters that affect movement from one point to another such as road surface condition, traffic volume, time of day and day of week enables the system to calculate shortest distances at different times”, says Mr. Eric Makori who was the technical lead for the 6-month project.

The street view system is a powerful way to spur advocacy and support better-informed public dialogue and planning. It is also a necessary step towards better public transit, which is critical to building better cities.

Northrift Solutions expect further improvements in the near future by overlaying houses and building to create a comprehensive house addressing system.

The service will be available only on Google Android devices but can at the moment be downloaded here.
