Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker Isaac Terer is facing an uphill task to defend his position against advocate Christopher Mitei.

The duo are the front runners in the race and are involved in a rematch having battled it out for the same position in 2013.

Terer unsuccessfully contested for the Kesses parliamentary seat in the just concluded elections and is now seeking to retain his position.

He is banking on his performance as speaker in the last assembly, which concluded its term without conflicts and rivalries witnessed in other counties.

However, he is facing stiff competition from one Christopher Mitei who is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Mitei is also the Uasin Gishu County Jubilee Party Secretary General and he played a pivotal role in coordinating and mobilising voters.

He has a wealth of experience in law having practised it for more than 15 years. He holds a Bachelors degree in law (first class honours) and is currently pursuing a Master of Laws degree at the Moi University.

Analysts have observed that Mitei has an upper hand with sources divulging that he has the backing of a number of MPs-elect including the influential Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi who has a significant political clout in Uasin Gishu.

Mitei has lobbied intensively for the backing of the new and reelected Members of County Assembly and has reportedly met several of the MCAs-elect to persuade them to support him. Sources indicate that most of the MCAs-elect have agreed to support him.

The Speaker’s position is highly coveted as the holder acts as the head of the Legislative Arm of the County Government and presides over its sittings. The assembly’s MCAs who are elected and others nominated will have the final say.

Others contesting for the position of Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker include Dennis Kirwa, David Kiplagat, Jane Masai, Mary Kiptoo, Ezekiel Kiyeng and Oliver Karori.
