Governor Alex Tolgos has begun his second term after being sworn-in as the county boss for Elgeyo Marakwet County.

In his Inaugural speech, Governor Tolgos pledged to build a cohesive and united county after a heated and competitive election and extended an olive branch to opponents to join hands. He appealed to other leaders to put aside differences and put the interests of the people first.

“I call upon all the residents to let go of campaign feelings and attachments and move on with our lives, Yaliyopita si ndwele, tugange yajayo,” he said.

Governor Tolgos highlighted achievements during his first term noting that the County was rated among the best performing in the country and promised to build on the road already paved.

“The next five years can only be better than the last four years,” he said.

Tolgos said he is committed to empowering youth and women noting that his selection of a youthful deputy governor is aimed at addressing and championing interests of the youth. He lauded women who he said had abandoned brewing of illicit brew and joined the county government sponsored rehabilitation programme terming them as heroines who are now leading clean and productive lives courtesy of the alternative income generating activities the county government started for them.

Governor Tolgos promised to deliver on his development agenda to ensure a robust education, better roads, provision of water, good climate for business, modern agriculture and efficient healthcare to bring lasting change to communities.

On road infrastructure, he promised to work with the national government to expand and maintain the road network in the county to enable easy access.

“By 2022, I want to assure you that we shall have a very reliable road network across the County and we will work jointly with our leaders at the national level to increase tarmac roads,” he said.

In agriculture, Tolgos said that his administration intends to increase value addition initiatives to ensure increased food production. He said the county government has sought partnerships to establish cottage industries and food processing factories in the county. The county government has already signed agreements with Kingdom Foods International which has business links in Switzerland for a potato factory.

Urban development is also included in Tolgos’ strategic plan with plans already underway to establish a sewerage system in Iten which is intended to modernize the town.

“We have concluded a spatial plan for Iten that will pave way for the establishment of a sewerage system in efforts to make Iten a modern town,” He said the spatial planning will also apply to other major towns in the County.

Governor Tolgos warned county staff that he will be strict and that he will not condone complacency in the delivery of services to the public.

“I wish to categorically warn all staff that I will not condone any behavior that slows down or affects the provision of services to the public, I will be very strict to ensure that shoddy projects and low absorption of public funds is a thing of the past,” He warned.

“Let me also warn anyone intending to enrich themselves using public funds in the coming five years that it will be impossible for you to do so in Elgeyo Marakwet, whether you are an employee or a contractor, any acts of corruption will not be condoned,” he added.

Elgeyo Marakwet County was listed as among the least corrupt counties in Kenya by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for ensuring prudent use of finances and putting in place mechanisms to ensure integrity and accountability in financial management processes.

Tolgos also informed of his plans to reorganize his government to make it more effective, efficient and responsive. He promised to deliver on campaign pledges to continue transforming the County citing that he intends to leave a good legacy when he finishes his term in 2022.
