Nandi residents have been urged to embrace avocado production in the spirit of diversification and the need to plan for alternative agricultural and other sectoral interventions to boost the region economically.
Speaking during the launch of an avocado farming project in Lolduga village, Olessos ward, Nandi Women Rep Dr. Tecla Tum observed the region’s need to diversify sources of livelihood in the wake of tough economic times.
She noted that avocado farming has a ready market internationally and generates good income compared to maize and milk.
“Avocado is a cash crop. It is the new gold that has been found in the world, so we have to embrace it here in Nandi ,” she said.
The County Women MP said her office will distribute a total of 13,000 avocado seedlings to women and youth.
“Avocado is on the demand at the moment in the international market, and through my office we will distribute seedlings to women and youth to enhance their income” she pointed out.
