Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly will blacklist all contractors awarded contracts in the County but do not deliver services to the required standard. This is according to the Chairperson of the Roads and Public Works Committee of the County Assembly of Elgeyo Marakwet Mr Zacharia Magut.
Mr Magut who is also the Member of County Assembly for Soy West Ward alleged irregularities in the award of contracts in the County which he said was a cash cow for proceeds of corruption. The situation, he said, will not be allowed to continue.
Speaking to the press outside the Assembly chambers, Mr Magut said following inspection of various roads in the County, several roads are in bad state despite contract documents indicating road works undertaken and completed, as well as payments made to contractors.
“We visited various roads recently as the County Assembly Committee of Roads and we were not pleased with the work done, we noted we are going to lose a lot of money in the county, some roads are indicated as completed, but when we saw, they are not, the report indicates they have been completed and payment has been made, when you look at the road, it does not match,” Magut said.
“It is essential to investigate to find out those who made sure that payments are made to people who did not do works so that they are arrested, and pay back the money,” he added.
He noted that there are plans in the County Assembly to give powers to the existing Ward Development Committees to evaluate projects in the County in a move aimed at eradicating misuse of public resources.
“We want to give powers to Ward Development Committees to evaluate projects,” he said.
The Roads and Public Works Committee Chairman received backing from the Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly Speaker Philemon Sabulei who said stern action in accordance with the laws of the republic, should be taken against persons utilizing public funds for selfish gain.
“Those contractors who have failed to do their work properly, they should be blacklisted effectively from this financial year, and any county government officials who engages in irregular approval of payments, when it is very clear that the contractor has not done their work, they should be surcharged, and legal processes should be adhered to” Sabulei said.
